Academic content
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to develop students’ ability to understand, analyse and evaluate inclusive special needs education both as a distinct pedagogical field and as an integral part of general education and school practice. The course emphasises the integration of theoretical knowledge and professional practice and aims to foster a critical and reflective understanding of inclusion and special needs education in contemporary schooling.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge Upon completion of the course, the student will have knowledge of: key concepts, theories and perspectives within inclusion and special needs education the role of special needs education in historical, social and institutional contexts the relationship between pedagogical thinking, organisational frameworks and school practice Skills Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: analyse and interpret educational situations in relation to inclusion and special needs education evaluate pedagogical practice based on relevant theoretical perspectives articulate and discuss professional issues using academically grounded arguments Competences Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: critically reflect on the role of special needs education in contemporary schooling act professionally and independently in work related to inclusive learning environments contribute to the development of educational practice based on theoretical and ethical consideratio
Content
The course explores the relationship between inclusion and special needs education as concepts, ideals and practices. These are examined both as interdependent perspectives and as fields that may create tensions in educational practice. The course focuses on: special needs education as a field of knowledge, concept and practice inclusion as an educational ideal and policy goal inclusive special needs education as a framework for addressing diversity and participation in schools analysis of educational practices and organisational conditions related to inclusion
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching is based on a combination of lectures, discussions, collaborative learning, group work, case analysis, student presentations, short written assignments and independent study. Emphasis is placed on active participation and on connecting theoretical perspectives to students’ professional experience.

Assessment method
A written assignment (7–10 pages) based on one or more challenges related to inclusion and special needs education in a school context. The assignment must also be presented orally in class
